The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in South Africa, after the drug-maker Pfizer has approved Viagra (sildenafil), has issued two letters to doctors, warning them that they should not be allowed to take the drug if a patient is taking a nitrate-based medication called “Viagra,” even though a doctor could be taking the medication if a patient is already taking nitrate-based medications. A South African doctor said it was a good thing that the drug could be used safely in patients who have heart disease, and “Viagra is safe for everyone to use.”
South Africa has not issued any warning about the drug’s safety, but a South African doctor wrote in an email to doctors that the drug may have serious side effects if a patient is taking nitrate-based medications such as nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur, Nitrolingual, Nitrostat, Nitrostat gel) or generic cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet, Tagamet-D, Tagamet-X, Tagamet).
